"Deep garnet-purple in color, the Penfolds Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 presents an intensely minty nose with undertones of ripe cassis, eucalyptus, cedar and a touch of herbs. Ripe and expressive in the mouth it has bright acid and medium levels of very fine tannins, it finishes concentrated and long. Drink it from 2014 to 2024+."

Bin 169 was created to reflect Penfolds contemporary winemaking approach emphasising both regionality and maturation of Cabernet Sauvignon in fine grained French oak. The Penfolds Bin 169 is a style that is immediately Penfolds, whilst simultaneously illustrative of its ongoing search for diversity and style separation. An honest reflection of the region and a testament of Penfolds’ longstanding commitment to the vineyards of Coonawarra.

Tasting Note

Colour – Deep, plum red.

Nose – Lifted dark berried fruits, blueberry and blackcurrant. Roasted capsicum, black olive and complexed with aromas of fresh herbs and nutmeg and cinnamon. Integrated cedary French oak. Medium – full bodied – tightly structured (typical of cabernet).

Palate – Flavours of red fruits, blackberry, provide excellent fruit sweetness with dark milk chocolate Liquorice and leather. Richness and generosity. Lively acid combined with balanced powdery tannins. Superb length.

Maturation

13 months in 100% new French oak

The vineyards weathered four days of January heat unscathed, as they were yet to go through veraison. A long and late harvest was conducive to excellent flavour development.

95 points | James Suckling

Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 2018 "This moves into refined and very striking style with a wealth of lemons, white peaches and nectarines on offer, as well as nicely curated hazelnut-oak. The smoothly honed palate has deep-set peach flavors and a succulent, cool-mineral and grapefruit finish. The finest Bin 311 to date."

93 points | Wilfred Wong of Wine.com

"The Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 2018 is beautifully layered and finishes nicely. TASTING NOTES: This wine is redolent of ripe fruit, light minerality, and a hint of oak in its aromas and flavors. Try it with pan-fried chicken thighs and wild mushrooms over egg noodles." (Tasted: August 29, 2020, San Francisco, CA)

92 points | Jeb Dunnock

"Bottled under screwcap, the 2018 Chardonnay Bin 311 comes all from cool climate sites in southeastern Australia and was brought up in French oak. Its light gold hue is followed by a racy perfume of stone fruits, crushed citrus, white flowers, and salty minerality. With plenty of richness, medium body, and nicely integrated acidity, this rock-solid Chardonnay is drinking great today yet has the class and balance to evolve for 4-6 years or more. It’s an impressive Chardonnay."

92 points | Robert Parker

"The 2018 Bin 311 Chardonnay is a multiregional blend sourced from Adelaide Hills (43%), Tumbarumba and Tasmania—it was previously a single-region bottling. Essentially, it's now a blend of barrels that didn't make it into the Reserve Bin label from the Adelaide Hills and barrels from Tumbarumba and Tassie that didn't make the Yattarna grade. Fermented and aged in 30% new French oak (20% second use and 50% older), it reveals hints of vanilla buttercream on the nose, paired with notes of pineapple, orange, pear and melon. It's medium-bodied, plump and creamy across the palate, then crisp and focused on the finish."

92 points | Wine Enthusiast

"This now-multiregional Chardonnay blend from wine giant Penfolds is a pretty, fruity number with both the polish associated with this brand and upfront appeal. Waxed apple, peach and lime aromas kick things off. There's a fringe of salt, like the rim of a margarita glass. Laser-like acidity slices through the highly textural palate, leading once again to a long, salty finish."

Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 2018 truly reflects the winemakers’ mantra ‘we always go where the fruit grows best and where it best suits style’. In 2018, fruit sourcing moved to multi-regional cool-climate regions; Adelaide Hills, Tumbarumba, Tasmania. In true Bin 311 style, it exhibits lemon/lime aromas and a mineral acid backbone, complemented by barrel fermentation and maturation in seasoned oak. Minimal filtration is employed, preserving elegant fruit flavours.

Tasting Note

Colour – Light straw

Nose – Full-flavoured, endowed with a concentrated fruit spectrum of citrus, grapefruit and white peach. Hints of sherbet, camomile and goats cheese complex the aromatic offer – a chardonnay cast assembled from three States of Australia. Certainly, there’s quite the performance happening in the glass, with barely a swirl of the glass and some air required to light up the stage!

Palate – First and foremost, this wine extolls freshness, yet not at the expense of an endearing richness and generosity of flavour. Whilst some may perceive it to be slightly ‘larger-framed’ than in previous years it nevertheless retains trademark Bin 311 mineral acidity and linearity. Rockmelon and white peach fruits are pronounced. Underlying sherbet and fresh lemon tart impressions coupled with a lovely creaminess add to the structural and flavour pool. A trademark Penfolds phenolic grip certainly doesn’t curtail length or volume. Yes, proactively rich, fresh and assertive! Drinkability? Do we have to wait?!

Maturation

10 months in French oak barriques (30% new, 20% 1-y.o., 50% seasoned)

All three regions enjoyed a relatively wet winter and spring which set the vines up well for the growing season. Tumbarumba had good rainfall right up to December, when a dry spell set in, while February temperatures were quite cool allowing for slow, consistent ripening. The Adelaide Hills had a very hot finish to the growing season with several heat spikes in January. Tasmania enjoyed clear and warm conditions over fruit set from January with no extreme heat days during the lead up to vintage. Harvest was an orderly affair, with grapes ripening evenly across the three regions. The grapes showed strong varietal character with desirable acidity.

98 points | Robert Parkers Wine Advocate

Penfolds RWT 2018 is "Sourced only from the Barossa Valley, RWT is aged exclusively in French oak, giving it two major points of difference from the rest of the Penfolds range. Always a sexy, voluptuous wine (and admittedly a personal favorite), the 2018 RWT Shiraz ratchets that up to new heights in a great Barossa vintage, boasting layers of berry-like fruit, refined vanilla shadings and baking-spice notes, plus more exotic elements like star anise and cocoa powder. It's full-bodied and plush without being unstructured in any way, with a lingering, complex finish and the concentration to age two decades or more." Joe Cerzinski, Robert Parkers Wine Advocate, July 2020

96 points | James Suckling

"Stunning blueberries and mulberries here with a wealth of baking spices and red berries, as well as tarry notes and blackberries. It is all here. The palate has a super plush, rich and quite compressed tannin feel. Some firm and powerful moments, as the palate builds with plentiful spiced summer berries. Red plums and blackberries to close. Try from 2025."

96 points | Wine Enthusiast

"Penfolds RWT 2018 offers layers of appealing aromas straight off the bat, from black cherry and currant to cedar, mocha, graphite, herbs and black olive. Concentrated yet impeccably balanced, the palate is smudged by savory tannins while spice and dark berry flavors weave seamlessly together. This delivers power and polish. Drink now–2040." Christina Pickard

The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a ‘trial’, RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. The alphanumeric Bin designation 798 was bestowed upon the wine from the 2016 vintage. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and plush texture. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa shiraz at the highest quality level. RWT wines area built for the long haul, with the precision, concentration and balance to age for many years.

Tasting Note

Colour – Great depth of crimson. Lustre, brilliance

Nose – Blueberry RWT markers thrust ahead of goji berry and loganberry fruits. An aromatic swirl of choc/hazelnut/liquorice propels all that is RWT style and class. Thereon, lifted scents of just glazed crème brûlée and wafts of icing sugar. Barrel-ferment and ferric overtones gently bring all back down to ground level – Barossa iron/earths no less.

Palate – Viscous and lush. An immediate supple fleshiness, liveliness. At release, during this primary fruit stage – berried ice-cream and black forest cake fruits unfold – redcurrant and blackberry. Powdery tannins – silky and glossy – offer textbook velvet/cashmere texture. So smooth! Dense, verging on unctuous, without any reliance or concession to alcohol or oak. Wonderful length, depth, balance.

Increased rainfall occurred in the second half of winter, with vines entering the growing season with moisture profiles well into the root zone, down to one metre. Conditions favoured canopy development in spring, initially dry before plentiful rainfall in November. Temperatures warmed substantially through spring boosting vine growth and rushing the vines through flowering. Summer was dry, with no recorded major rain events. This carried into January with a heat spike around veraison causing vines to stall, pushing the start of vintage out by a week or so. The warm, dry weather carried into autumn, setting up an Indian summer with favourable conditions for ripening grapes. A very strong vintage for Barossa Valley shiraz.

95 points | James Suckling

Penfolds St Henri 2017 "This has a very impressive, intense nose with a cool and spicy edge, as well as aromas of red flowers and fresh raspberries, set amid some wild-herb tones. The palate has very expressive raspberry and cranberry flavors, delivered among fine, crunchy and lithe, juicy tannins. The palate has a deep, red-plum core that’s quite tautly contained and wrapped up neatly for some time to come. Try this from 2025."

93 points | Robert Parker

"The St Henri point of difference is that it's aged in old, large wooden vats. Sourced from throughout South Australia, the Penfolds St Henri 2017 Shiraz reveals no oak in its rather raw, unrefined notes of bloody beef, mixed berries, black olives and road tar. It's full-bodied and still tannic at this stage, with a bit of coarseness on the finish that hopefully time will soften. While not the best vintage for St Henri, it's a commendable effort that should age well. "(Joe Czerwinski, RobertParker.com, July 2020)

96 points | Wine Enthusiast

"The latest bottling of St. Henri, from a cool vintage, is a classic. Inky-hued, it's a deep well of flavour: plush blackberries, roasted vegtables, coffee beans, dark chocolate and a sanguine nuance. The palate is rich and mouthfilling but linear, with polished, spicy oak and fine, powerful tannins. It's a big wine that needs a major hit of protein if drinking now, but it will age beautifully for many decades to come. Drink through 2045. Christina Pickard"

Penfolds St Henri is a time-honoured and alternative expression of shiraz, and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual amongst high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak. Released for the first time by Penfolds in the early 1950s (first commercial vintage 1957), it gained a new lease of life in the 1990s as its quality and distinctive style became better understood. Proudly, a wine style that hasn’t succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters with age. It is matured in an assortment of old large vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of cabernet may sneak into the blend, the focal point for St Henri remains shiraz.

Tasting Note

Colour – Deep plum red

Nose – Savoury notes first detected, yet quickly courted by generous cherry liqueur/chocolate aromas. Scents of dried beef sit alongside a textbook garrigue deconstruction – dried herb/oregano/thyme/lavender. Perplexingly, an exotic emission continues – best guess – copha, cranberry and activated walnut! Shiraz unplugged… oak or artefact not part of this wine’s demeanour. Smells like? St Henri.

Palate – A masterclass of texture: plush, glossy, seamless – abetted by silky, polished tannins. One taster quipped: “millennial tannins”! Black olive; coffee and mocha flavours abound, as do the generous shiraz fruits sourced from the northern viticultural reaches of South Australia. Medium-bodied, with a great core and lovely framework – yet what is sipped fills the mouth so effortlessly. A succulence is immediately noted – a fruited pomegranate/cranberry/quince paste-induced acidity, balanced with fruit sweetness. Not trying too hard. St Henri rarely does.

Maturation

12 months in 50+ y.o. vats

Longstanding rainfall records were broken across South Australia, with some regions experiencing minor flooding. The dams in Eden Valley were full by the end of winter. October was windy, which challenged fruit-set, however winds warded off any potential frost events in the Barossa Valley vineyards. Cool conditions extended the growing season, with flowering and veraison both later than expected. No heatwaves were recorded during summer and only a handful of days surpassed 40°C. Warmer weather in March was welcomed, allowing grapes to finish ripening, develop deep colour and varietal character. Harvest for shiraz grapes commence mid-March, a month later than the previous year.

The 2016 Grange includes 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and was sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley, with a little bit from Magill Estate, in the suburbs of Adelaide. Aged in 100% new American oak (as always), it offers up trademark lifted aromas plus scents of vanilla, toasted coconut, cedar, raspberries and blackberries. Impressively concentrated and full-bodied, with an extraordinarily long, velvety finish, it's nevertheless reasonably fresh and tight, with decades of cellaring potential if properly stored. Certainly at least on a par with such vintages as 2010 and 2012, the big question is whether it will ultimately reach triple digits. (JC tasted July 2020)

So much going on in the glass; it’s a tempestuous opera with a big cast. On the nose, there’s high lift from a big, generous swirl of fruity aromas that carry a hint of fermented fig among the blackberry, dark plum and aniseed. Investigate further on the palate and there’s a lot going on within its dense hedge of dark berries and secondary flavours of mocha and liquorice. Ultimately, it’s the heavy black notes that win out and persist, but there is so much to ponder, even after the event has concluded. A Grange worth mulling over. (DS - July 2020)

This is a very intense Grange with such rich black-fruit, tar and coal-smoke aromas together with iodine and black-olive notes and an array of wild dark herbs. Almost impenetrable dark plums and licorice, as well as bacon fat. The palate has such seamless delivery of intense blackberry and plum flavors with some redder tones emerging, too. The power here is countered by such freshness and an almost elegant feel. This has such impressive, vibrant, long and seamless fruit power. Really is exceptionally complete, but tight, needs time to open. Very enjoyable now, but better after 2023. (July 2020)

Distinctly generous in character, but there's also superb energy thanks to a core of juicy acidity. But clearly a great deal of work has been done on smoothing the tannins. Concentrated but not exaggerated. Sweet and smooth with a hint of camphor.
Penfolds Grange, a powerful example of Penfolds’ multi-vineyard, multi-district blending approach, is among Australia’s most iconic wines. Recognized as a Heritage Icon of South Australia, Grange is crafted from fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured Shiraz grapes, showcasing a unique style that stands among the world’s finest wines. Since the 1951 experimental vintage, Grange has consistently displayed the harmony of Shiraz with South Australia’s diverse soils and climates.

Tasting Note

Colour – Bright, deep red with iris-purple at the rim.

Nose – A fusion of preserved figs, black plum, blackberry and black liquorice flirts with an aromatic elution of fish oil, anchovy, soy and sesame/nori. Nascent scents of toasted charred meats (rotisserie rib of beef?), rendered fat/marrow … An uplifting freshness and higher notes are liberated with air – awakened scents akin to cola, Chinotto, aniseed, root beer. Camouflaged (new!) oak has to be proactively sought out, verified. Strikes a Grange stylistic bullseye, all boxes ticked.

Palate – A retronasal transfer of the aromatics listed above converge to similarly adorn the palate. Full-bodied – turbo-propelled by a V.A./formic mix, affording attaque and grip, yet respectful of balance and style. Custom-fitted with impressive density and length – all dark and black, harmonious. Oak conceded – absorbed, compliant – effortlessly merging with blue and black fruits and dark chocolate/mocha notes. Solid, malleable tannins, with an exacting acid coupling, serve to polish and elevate; no doubt soon to preserve. Energetic, focussed. Much still to reveal … 97% Shiraz, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon
