Precioso Malbec

Precioso is an opportunity to explore the most premium expression of each Microterroir.

It is a classic Malbec expression with great fruit depth and spicy complexity from the oak ageing. It delivers many layers of black fruit jam, spices, toast, chocolate and tobacco on the palate, lingering in a beautiful long, savoury finish. This complex and expressive wine is an excellent example of a modern style of Malbec, with bright acidity and a chalky textural palate.

Precioso Cabernet Franc is an expressive, complex, and bold red wine with elegant oak use. Its expressive profile of abundant plum, blackberry jam, and black pepper, with a soft pyrazine, leather, and smoke undertone, surprises the nose and the palate. It finishes with a dried tobacco and chocolate note from the oak. The tannins are fine-grained and abundant, giving it a luscious texture, perfectly balanced with its vibrant acidity.

Nicolas, the Flagship from Catena Zapata, is a giant – intense, complex blend to stand over time

96 points | Decanter

"Made with grapes from pre-phylloxera massal selections of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec from the Uco Valley, this blend from Catena Zapata Nicolás 2018 was fermented in oak, cement and steel and aged for 18 months in barrels. It has a complex nose of red and dark fruit, sweet spices, notes of Earl Grey tea, gunpowder, cedar, violets and eucalyptus. Broad and free-flowing, the compact core offers fine tannins and intriguing cellar potential."

96 points | Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"The Catena Zapata Nicolás 2018 was produced with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon from Gualtallary (Adrianna vineyard, with the Cabernet Sauvignon interplanted with some Cabernet Franc) and 35% Malbec from Altamira (Nicasia vineyard). They no longer use grapes from Agrelo, and this is also a lot higher in Malbec than in other recent vintages. So, it has a very different profile, a charge that started in 2017, with more contained ripeness and more freshness, and the wine is intense, keeping some of the Cabernet character (tobacco, blackberries) and the floral notes from Malbec. It comes through as balanced and harmonious, with very fine tannins and a long finish and perfect ripeness. This aims to revive the style of Bordeaux before phylloxera, from massal selection of ungrafted vines."

96 points | James Suckling

"Aromas of blackberries, grilled meat, blackcurrants and wet earth. Full-bodied, tight and compact with dense dark berries and currants. Linear and long with a tight, focused palate. A blend of cabernet sauvignon and malbec."

97 points | Wine.com

"The Catena Zapata Nicolás 2018 is a standout wine. TASTING NOTES: This wine delivers aromas and flavors of black fruit, licorice, earth, and oak. Pair it with a grilled, well-marbled ribeye." (Tasted: Wilfred Wong March 23, 2022, San Francisco, CA)

Tasting Notes

Catena Zapata Nicolás 2018 shows an intense, deep purple with bluish-black tones. Black fruits dominate the nose—blackberries, black cherries, and black plums—with subtle layers of vanilla and dark chocolate, alongside savory green olive and a mineral hint. On the palate, the wine reveals tremendous complexity, unfolding red currant, eucalyptus, and black pepper flavors. Black cherry and blackberry notes transition to cassis, followed by a touch of saline minerality. Richly concentrated, the wine’s firm tannic structure underpins its lush fruit, leading to a long finish that hints at exceptional aging potential for this Argentine masterpiece.

Background

Catena Zapata introduced the Nicolás in 1997 as the first luxury Argentine cuvée exported worldwide. It recreates the “Original Bordeaux Blend” of the 18th and 19th centuries, where Malbec played a dominant role alongside Cabernet Sauvignon in Médoc. Ungrafted pre-phylloxeric Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Mendoza’s mountain vineyards give this wine a unique historical character.

Vinification

Harvesting is conducted by hand, with some parcels undergoing whole-bunch fermentation to enhance tannic structure and freshness. Fermentation occurs in 500-liter oak barrels, concrete, and stainless steel tanks at 26-28ºC for 10-15 days, followed by a post-fermentative maceration lasting 5-10 days. Malolactic fermentation is completed, and the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months.

Nicolás, the Flagship from Catena Zapata, is a giant – an intense, complex blend to stand over time

97 points | Decanter

"The Catena Zapata Nicolás 2016 vintage is a classic example, a superb blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with 31% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Franc that’s still in its infancy. Subdued aromas of cassis, black cherries and nuanced herbaceous and tobacco notes. A lovely fluid entrance builds on concentration and complexity. Malbec’s seductive juiciness joins a vertical Cabernet structure, tannins and integrated oak, with a long, lingering finish. A wine to wait for."

96 points | Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"The Catena Zapata Nicolás 2016 has not been released, and they are going to sell the 2017 before it. This is the one wine, together with the Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec, that is sold through the négoce in Bordeaux for Europe and Asia. This is backward, serious and austere, with terrific balance and great length. This is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon from Gualtallary and 31% Malbec from Nicasia. There is also some 8% Cabernet Franc that seems to add a touch, and in 2016, it didn’t need irrigation because there was enough rain. This seems to follow the style of the 2013, a little tight, perhaps because of the Cabernets. This is nuanced and complex, with very good integration of the varieties and the oak, fruit, acidity and mineral texture. One of the best vintages for this bottling."

95 points | James Suckling

Catena Zapata Nicolás 2016 is "a rich and flavourful red, showing blackcurrants and tobacco. Full-bodied, soft and fruity with bright and spicy, oyster-shell and fresh-herb character. Serious cabernet blend."

An intense dark violet hue with blue-black tones is exhibited by Catena Zapata Nicolás 2016. Delicate black cherry and licorice aromas are presented, enlivened by mineral notes, violet, spice, and herbs. The palate is marked by sharp delineation and impressive concentration, with very fresh currant and mineral flavours supported by a firm backbone.

According to legend, this mist protected a mythical Māori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover, Te Mata. This wine shows richness, deep black fruit flavors, and a structured, long finish.

Tasting Note

A deep crimson red, Te Kahu offers aromas of cassis, black olive, dried tobacco, and a hint of roasted hazelnut. The palate brims with ripe red and black fruits, reflecting a warm, extended ripening season. This wine embodies a medium-bodied Bordeaux-style blend from Gimblett Gravels.

The Wine

Craggy Range ‘Te Kahu’ Gimblett Gravels Red is a Bordeaux-inspired blend: Merlot (49%), Cabernet Sauvignon (34%), Cabernet Franc (12%), Malbec (3%), and Petit Verdot (2%).

The Winery

At the winery, fermentation took place in closed top stainless-steel tanks, with selected yeasts. Maturation lasted for 16 months in oak barriques, of which 18% were new. The wine displays concentrated aromas of cassis, black olive and dried tobacco that leads to a palate of great energy, with red fruits and liquorice framed by dark chocolate laced tannins. Te Kahu means ‘the cloak’ in te reo Maori and refers to the mist that envelops Giants Winery in the Tukituki Valley. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata.

Craggy Range 'Te Kahu' Gimblett Gravels 2023 is a deep dark red in colour. The bouquet shows bold aromatics of black fruits. Boysenberry, blackberry and plum dominate the subtle varietal aromatics of fresh mint and thyme with cinnamon showing from its time in oak. The palate is fresh and lively. Lovely fine tannins surround a ripe core of sweet fruit with good acidity providing balance and length on the finish.

The Craggy Range ‘Te Kahu’ Gimblett Gravels 2023 is a Bordeaux inspired blend of Merlot (49%), Cabernet Sauvignon (34%), Cabernet Franc (12%), Malbec (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%). At the winery, fermentation took place in closed top stainless-steel tanks, with selected yeasts. Maturation lasted for 16 months in oak barriques, of which 18% were new.

Background

Te Kahu means ‘the cloak’ in te reo Maori and refers to the mist that envelops Giants Winery in the Tukituki Valley. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata. This is a wine of richness and an abundance of black fruit flavours and a long structured finish.

100 points | Jane Anson

A classical vintage that perfectly suits the Opus style. Gorgeous vivid plum colour, sculpted, balanced, with a ton of lift, waves of rose petals, iris and peony, soft grilled cumin, sage and white pepper spice. Love the hidden power here and the supple slightly chalky tannins that are structured in their architecture with a precision and carved quality. Precise, layered and stretched out, a brilliant Opus, concentrated and yet delicate. Feels pared back and captures the spirit of early Opus, when it moved forward the conversation of what Napa could be. Michael Silacci director, 100% new oak for ageing extremely well integrated even now.

99 points | James Suckling

An enticing aroma of violets, cherry blossoms, fresh blue and black fruit and great structure define this beautiful, age-worthy wine. Subtle layering of fruit and oak spices between firm, fine-grained and supportive tannins gives it a calm intensity. So elegant and polished. Hints of cinnamon and graphite accent blackcurrant and blueberry flavors that linger and grow in a long finish. Already attractive to drink, but best after 2029.

98 Points | Lisa Perrott-Brown The Wine Independent

The 2021 Opus One is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, and 0.5% each of Merlot and Malbec. It was bottled in July 2023. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes barreling out of the glass with gregarious notions of creme de cassis, wild blueberries, and redcurrant jelly followed by hints of cedar chest, sassafras, vanilla pod, and dark chocolate plus a waft of lilacs. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers shimmery red, black, and blue fruit layers with a firm texture of rounded tannins and impressive tension, finishing long and fragrant.

97 points | Antonio Galloni

The 2021 Opus One is absolutely gorgeous. Vibrant, layered and quite sensual in feel, the 2021 possesses the concentration and depth of years such as 2013 and 2010 but with more polished tannins. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and a touch of cinnamon open gracefully. Sweet floral notes extend the mid-palate into the finish, where silky tannins wrap it all together. The 2021 is an incredibly promising Opus One. Anticipated maturity: 2026-2051 [Tasted, 21/12/2023]

Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Opus One is another riveting wine from this estate. Pure cassis, graphite, chocolate, and nicely integrated oak, as well as an undeniable sense of minerality, all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, building tannins, wonderful purity and precision, and a great finish. This is a classic Napa Valley Cabernet in the making, and it’s going to evolve for 20-25 years if well stored.

Vintage Highlights

Despite Covid challenges and a climate of extreme drought, 2020 vintage led to outstanding quality grapes. As a result of the accumulated extremely dry conditions, rainfall decreased by 20% compared to the previous season, and river flows were 50% lower than average. The 2020 summer was warm and cooled off by the end of February, leading to a very early harvest. Beautifully concentrated wines with expressive aromatics and high vibrant acidity followed, predicting maybe one of the best vintages in recent history.

99 points | James Suckling

The purity of fruit is really something else here, with currants and fresh flowers, such as violets and roses. Flower stems as well. Fantastic length and structure to the wine, with tightness and focus. Wonderful fruit. Graceful. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. Try after 2028. (Dec 2022)

98 points | Decanter

Intensely perfumed on the nose, rose petals, violets, deeply scented and seductive. Rich yet expansive on the palate, very open with dark chocolate, cherries, fragrant blackcurrant - sweet and scented, with satin-like tannins that effortlessly support the flavours. There is a real drive and persistence to this: fresh, youthful and alive with a vibrant juiciness that is so appealing. No one element is too dominant; this feels harmonious and balanced with excellent tangy acidity and a long, minty, herbal finish with edges of tobacco and dark chocolate—a classic Opus with breadth, finesse and energy. Drink 2024 - 2045. (Georgina Hindle, tasted July 2022)

97 points | Jeb Dunnuck

The 2019 Opus One is brilliant and certainly a worthy follow-up to the 2018. Pure cassis fruits, notes of violets, rose petals, and lead pencil, medium to full body, nicely integrated background oak, and terrific tannins all define this beauty, and while it has the vintage's up-front charm, it's going to age beautifully for 20+ years as well. The blend is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Drink 2023 - 2045. (tasted Feb 2023)

18+/20 points | Jancis Robinson MW

Transparent crimson - much paler than the average Napa Cab blend. Heady, complex nose with very many more layers than the Overture launched at the same time, September 2022 on the Bordeaux Place. Hints of tobacco leaf as well as very ripe fruit. Really high toned; this could double as a nasal decongestant, I think. Much more pronouned cassis flavours than the Overture even though the proportion of Cabernet is much lower. Sweet palate entry but a real lift and kick on the finish. No heaviness at all. A little less bordelais than the 2018: richer but not concentrated or overripe in the stereotypical Napa Cab idiom. I'd love to see this blind in a line-up with other Napa Cabs. Tannins very well managed with a tiny chewiness on the very end. You could drink it already, but on past performance one has to believe it has ageing potential. Drink 2022 - 2034. (tasted Sept 2022)

Opus One 2019 is one of the best vintages of this famous wine.

Tasting Note

The Opus One 2019 has intense aromas of black plum, blueberry, black currant, and dried rose petals, accentuated by mineral undertones. The creamy, satiny texture is framed by fine-grained tannins. The freshness and soft glow of acidity create a subtle tension with dark fruit flavors, savory herbs, espresso, and cocoa. A delicate dark chocolate bitterness lingers on the finish.

Hold +3 years or carafe 4 hours.

The balance of the 2019 vintage in Napa is a pleasure to taste, and this is a brilliant Opus One, showing nuance, depth and concentration, and a ton of rich dark fruits. There is so much to love here, it ebbs and flows through the palate, has some of the character of the early years, those 1979s and 1980s that are still tasting incredible, and the utterly brilliant 1987.

Raspberry, blueberry, damson, cassis, there are crunchy fruits and sweet fruits at the same time, playing off against each other, fine tannins, a full bloom of floral violet and peony aromatics, gentle woodsmoke and white pepper, with tension, depth and poise. 22 day skin contact. A wet winter meant a late bud break, 10-15 days behind average, followed by a hot summer that allowed the vines to catch up, so harvest relatively normal beginning September 10 for one month. Drink 2024 – 2042
