Background

Te Kahu means “the cloak” in Te Reo Māori, symbolizing the mist that covers Giants Winery in Tukituki Valley. According to legend, this mist protected a mythical Māori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover, Te Mata. This wine shows richness, deep black fruit flavors, and a structured, long finish.

Tasting Note

A deep crimson red, Te Kahu offers aromas of cassis, black olive, dried tobacco, and a hint of roasted hazelnut. The palate brims with ripe red and black fruits, reflecting a warm, extended ripening season. This wine embodies a medium-bodied Bordeaux-style blend from Gimblett Gravels.

The Wine

Craggy Range ‘Te Kahu’ Gimblett Gravels Red is a Bordeaux-inspired blend: Merlot (49%), Cabernet Sauvignon (34%), Cabernet Franc (12%), Malbec (3%), and Petit Verdot (2%).

The Winery

At the winery, fermentation took place in closed top stainless-steel tanks, with selected yeasts. Maturation lasted for 16 months in oak barriques, of which 18% were new. The wine displays concentrated aromas of cassis, black olive and dried tobacco that leads to a palate of great energy, with red fruits and liquorice framed by dark chocolate laced tannins. Te Kahu means ‘the cloak’ in te reo Maori and refers to the mist that envelops Giants Winery in the Tukituki Valley. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata.

Tasting Note

Straight away the bright cherry with purple hue leaps from the glass of the Craggy Range Martinborough Pinot Noir 2021. Scents of wild strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, soft savoury spice and white truffle notes are all in abundance on the nose. The palate has so much excitement with acidity so remarkably fresh yet not overwhelming and doesn’t detract from the silky soft tannins and velvety mouthfeel. Beautifully varietal. A surprising wine with a very long road ahead, if you can wait. If not, have it with your duck…

Region

The Pinot Noir fruit comes from the Wairarapa subregion of Martinborough, in the southeastern corner of the North Island. The soils contains layers of ancient weathered volcanic ash, which has reacted with the rocks and hastened their decomposition to a point where they can be easily broken. This soil produces exceptional Pinot Noir, which stylistically shows incredible complexity, a reserved intellectual feel, and great length. The vines are VSP trained to allow appropriate airflow and capture sunlight. Following the practises used by viticulturist François Dal, pruning techniques are being evolved to improve sap flow and reduce trunk disease. Working towards a more organic approach, herbicides are being minimised, cover crops are being introduced, and the vineyard team is moving towards a more organic-based spray programme. The grapes are hand-harvested.

This fruit was carefully sorted before being 100% destemmed. Fermentation took place with selected and indigenous yeasts in open-topped stainless-steel tanks and French oak vats. The wine was aged in French oak barriques for eight months, 21% of which were new.

"From the excellent 2019 vintage, and again from the Gravels, 18% of this was whole-bunch fermented with indigenous yeasts, and it spent 14 months in barriques of French oak, 25% new. Very vibrant in colour, there's a cool, schist and gravel aspect to the nose, over taut red fruit, a sheen of oak. On the palate the wine opens, still with that taut, gravel and graphite cool, but the cherry and red plum fruit is both bright and deep, supported by some understated oak, into a long, poised finish. Impressive young wine."

Gimblett Gravels

Once labeled Block 14 Syrah, this wine originates from a Heritage clone brought to New Zealand 150 years ago. For premium Syrah with a true sense of place, few wines compare.

The Gimblett Gravels district in Hawke’s Bay lies on the ancient Ngaruroro River bed. The river changed course in 1867, uncovering soils ideal for viticulture. With low altitude and nearby sea breezes, the area enjoys a temperate maritime climate. The stony soil retains warmth, creating Hawke’s Bay’s warmest vineyard site. This moderated warmth preserves the wine’s floral and aromatic qualities.

The soils include greywacke stones, silt, and sand, reaching depths of 40 meters. These stones absorb and radiate heat, aiding grape ripening. The fast-draining soils control vine growth, producing ripe, structured reds with “Gimblett Dust” character, marked by minerality and dusty notes.

Harvested by both hand and machine, the fruit was sorted and mostly destemmed, with 10% whole-bunch fermentation. The wine fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks and oak vats, then aged in French oak (23% new) for 15 months.

Vintage & Winemaking

The 2019 vintage yielded low quantities but exceptional quality. Many Hawke’s Bay producers consider it their best red vintage. The season provided ample sunshine without extreme heat, ensuring balanced, expressive wines.

This wine is 60% hand-harvested with 11% whole-bunch fermentation and 22% new oak aging.

This 93-point Syrah from Gimblett Gravels pairs excellently with pan-fried lamb chops and other red meat dishes.

The mid-palate suppleness and sweetness are already so enticing and sure to appeal to loyal followers of this wine. A delicious release.

"This top-end Syrah comes from the gravel soils of the Gimblett Gravels viticultural area. It is made with 65% whole bunches, in a mix of open-top French oak cuves and stainless steel, fermented with indigenous yeast and aged 17 months in French oak barriques, 38% new. There's immediately huge concentration evident, a deep-set black fruit, ebony and chestnut depth, sizzling bacon fat and yet a hint of sweet spices and floral lift. On the palate the oak is a touch resinous at the moment, but there's so much packed into this smooth, dense wine, the creamy acidity and fine tannin structure also promising longevity. Arguably better in a few years I suspect and will cellar for 10 years easily."

The Craggy Range Le Sol Syrah 2019 is deep and dark with a purple hue. An overwhelming presence that suggests this wine will live to be iconic. The nose is flush with mulberry, violets, lavender and cocoa. While young and vibrant with taut tannins, the palate is complex, deep and intoxicating – so much dark, black fruit, changing with each mouthful.

Background

Le Sol (French: the soil) is born of the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural appellation, with its gravelly soils attracting the sun in summer and insulating the vines in winter. The vines are planted in the stoniest parts of the vineyard to a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s. Intensively hand managed, the grapes reveal a deep dark Syrah with purple hues. The Le Sol is always aromatically pure with a luscious yet elegant mid-palate and a distinctive fine tannin finish.
