98 points | Wine Enthusiast

The Masseto 2021 and the Massetino 2020 bring to mind the Duomo of Florence and the dome of St. Peter's Basilica—both magnificent, imposing and equally beautiful. And if the Masseto is more architecturally sophisticated, the Massetino seems to do more with less. The Cabernet Franc works like an ice plunge after a hot sauna, tempering the almost terrifying intensity of the Merlot. A work of art, in any case. Gorgeous now, better in 2031."

96 points | Wine Advocate

The Masseto 2021 Massetino is mostly Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc for good measure. The wine (packaged in a heavy glass bottle) is very richly concentrated and layered. You see (and taste) the opulent texture of the wine as it slowly coats the glass. Quality fruit is matched by carefully selected oak, and the intensity of both builds on the palate. This vintage is poised for especially long cellar aging. This vintage of Massetino (2021) scores neck-in-neck with the current vintage (2020) of Masseto.

96 points | James Suckling

Sweet berries with violet and rose aromas. Raspberries. So perfumed. Medium-bodied with very fine velvety tannins that run the length of the wine. Vibrant at the end. Second wine of Masseto. Best ever. Drink in 2027 but already a joy to taste.

95 points | Jeb Dunnuck

A deep but transparent red colour, the 2021 Massetino is harmonious and pure with aromas of polished leather, red apple, Amarena cherry, violets, and fresh rosemary. It’s penetrating on the palate, with outstanding freshness within this full-bodied red, offering ripe tannins, refreshing acidity, and very nice structure. It boasts a beautiful and clean mineral flourish on the very long and even finish, with a hint of warmth and cocoa on the back palate. It is fabulous already without anything sticking out and captures the warmth of the vintage with a graceful approach, while its liqueur-like fruit lasts for ages on the finish. A fantastic vintage for this wine, drink 2025-2045.

Tasting Notes

The high quality potential perceived when tasting the grapes before harvesting is reflected in the qualitative expression of Massetino 2021. A wine characterised by integrity, crispness and brilliant colours. The aromas are immediately memorable for their persistence and fullness. Vibrant, young and evolving tannins keep the palate alive with tenacity. Massetino 2021 is as powerful as the vintage in which it was born.

Vintage

2021 began with a rainy and mild winter that replenished the soil’s water reserves.

After a dry March, budding took place in the first two weeks of April. The gradual rise in temperatures, with normal rainfall, allowed the shoots to grow steadily, leading to blossoming in excellent conditions at the end of May. Perfect summer weather set in from June onwards, with slightly higher than average temperatures and almost no rainfall, leading to veraison in the last week of July. The dry weather lasted throughout August and September.

In spite of this, the spring rains gave the calcareous-clayey soils the ability to release sufficient reserves to the plant to avoid debilitating stress, resulting in concentrated grapes with high quality potential.

Vinification & Ageing

The grapes were harvested by hand in 15kg boxes. Fermentation took place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts at temperatures of around 25-28°C, with pumping over two or three times a day and destages when necessary.

Malolactic fermentation took place in barriques, with 50 per cent new oak. After the first 12 months of ageing, the wine was blended and aged again in barriques for a further three months before being bottled.

Producer’s tasting notes: A wine characterised by integrity, freshness and bright colours. The aromas are immediately memorable for their persistence and fullness. The vibrant, youthful and evolving tannins keep the palate alive with tenacity. Massetino 2021 is as powerful as the vintage in which it was born

98+ points | Vinous

The 2019 Masseto is fabulous. Silky, gracious and super-refined, the 2019 is a total knock-out. So often Masseto is a powerhouse at this stage, but the 2019 is so elegant, so precise. This is the first year that includes Cabernet Franc, 10% in this case. I can’t say I am at all surprised given how much Franc has added to Massetino. Red berry fruit, mocha, cinnamon and blood orange lend freshness throughout. The 2019 has just been bottle, so it's early. But there certainly appears to be a lot to look forward to. (March 2022)

98 Points | Wine Advocate

This bottle opens a new chapter for one of Italy's most celebrated and collected wines. The first vintage made entirely in its dedicated state-of-the-art winery (and the first vintage with a 10% dabble of Cabernet Franc added to what has historically aways been a pure expression of Merlot), the Masseto 2019 Masseto has two main themes at heart: concentration and elegance. And managing those two seemingly contrasting elements requires a little bit of magic. That's the Masseto magic we look for. The 2019 vintage delivers it in spades with lovely concentrated fruit, blackberry, integrated spice, tobacco, crushed slate, pencil shaving and lots of texture and fiber to push a lasting mouthfeel. The wine's richness translates into density and power to the palate, meanwhile the bouquet reveals fluidity and new sides as the wine opens in the glass. The finish is tapered and focused. 2025 - 2050".

99 Points | Jane Anson

"A sculpted but intense Masseto, with a powerful creep through the palate of liqourice, chocolate, espresso, cocoa, turmeric and smoked vanilla bean. Stunningly rich in texture and concentration, but captures the freshness of eucalypytus, raspberry leaf and crushed mint. 100% new oak, confident, with a velvety punch of flavour from beginning to end. An interesting vintage in tems of the wider conversation around grapes and climate also, as a touch of Cabernet Franc is included for the first time for added grip, from a plot within the vineyard that was planted back in 2002. They expect this percentage to rise over the coming years, begging the question of whether bottles of the old style Masseto will become a time capsule of when Merlot was possible in Bolgerhi? All the more reason to savour it now. 12 months in bottle following the barrel ageing. Director Axel Heinz, winemaker Eleonora Marconi. 100% new oak."

Winemaking at Masseto is at the same time an adventure and a continuous discovery.
A patchwork of different terroirs.
Multiple subtle expressions of Merlot.

Tasting Notes

Masseto 2019, harvested slightly later than usual has benefited from the sunny but mild weather in early September, giving a dense yet harmonious expression. The youthful colour suggests a rich and intense wine, the nose shows textbook scents of ripe cherries, violet, liquorice and dark chocolate. The palate is broad and dense with velvety and refined tannins that coat the palate, while leaving a fresh and vibrant finish.

Vintage

The year 2019 was characterised by a highly variable climate, which alternated periods of cold and rain with long bouts of drought and heat.

After a rather normal winter, budding took place on the first week of April. Cold and rainy conditions throughout April and May considerably slowed down development of the vegetation, delaying flowering to 10 days later than usual. In June, the climate suddenly turned hot and dry, with peak temperatures of 37°C reached at the end of the month. All summer long the weather remained hot and sunny, with temperatures 2°C higher than average and 45 consecutive days without rain.

In the last week of July, the long period of drought was interrupted by two days of rain, readjusting the temperature to the seasonal norm, with ideal conditions for grape ripening. After another set of rain showers at the beginning of the month, Merlot harvest began on 5th September with the young vines and went on until 20th September under perfect conditions. Harvest was completed with the Cabernet Franc on 1st October.

Vinification

The bunches, hand harvested in 15kg crates, were sorted by hand on a double sorting table before and after destemming and then subjected to soft crushing. Most of the fermentation took place in concrete tanks, while the grapes from some small parcels fermented in barrels at temperatures between 25 and 30°C. Maceration times ranged from 21 to 28 days.

Malolactic fermentation began in 100% new oak barrels, while keeping the various lots separate for the first 12 months of ripening. Subsequently, the wine was blended and reintroduced once again into the barrels for another year, for a total of 24 months. As usual, Masseto 2019 was given another 12 months in bottle before being released on the market.

Opening a bottle releases a kaleidoscope of flavors—a unique mix of opulent richness and refined elegance.

100 points | Decanter

Masseto Toscana IGT 2020 has "Intense and full on the nose, fragrant with ripe black fruit, floral aspects and soft spicing. Round and full on the palate, it's rich and muscular yet tight and neatly coiled with a liquorice, graphite, pepper, cinnamon and clove tang that gives this immediate but enjoyable spice. Feels well worked, juicy with high acidity that lifts the palate and gives freshness and brightness alongside really quite mouthwatering strawberry and raspberry fruit with such captivating dried floral and bitter orange rind aspects. Tannins are super fine and so well integrated yet this maintains a grip and hold from the very beginning through to a long and sustained finish. Nuanced and complex, still packing a punch in terms of power, but this feels sophisticated, suave, purposeful and controlled. Not elegant, this is more of a caged animal with it's full potential yet to be unveiled, but it is classy. A truly delicious wine with so much purity and sense of place. Malolactic fermentation in 100% new barroques, with each batch kept separate for the first 12 months of ageing before being blended and returned to barriques for another year, totalling 24 months. The wine was then aged for a further 12 months in bottle before being released."

99 Points | Wine Enthusiast

Masseto Toscana IGT 2020 "A hedge maze of aromas greets the nose, from blackberries and black cherries to crushed stones and crumpled petals, before a gentle addition of vanilla and toasted coconut. Mixed berries with vanilla and cardamom soak the palate, followed by freshly tilled dirt and flinty stone notes, and finally an astringent, brooding spiciness on the back. Tannins are tightly stitched together across the palate like a tapestry, with acrobatic acid emphasizing a salt and pepper finish. A wine that speaks volumes without shouting."

96 Points | Robert Parker

"The 2020 Masseto now sees new DNA with a touch of Cabernet Franc added to this celebrated Merlot-based icon wine. This is a vintage of enormous richness and density, and everything about the wine is taken up a notch or two (including the bottle glass weight and the 15% alcohol content). But Axel Heinz and his team are well prepared for the hot vintages like 2020, and changes to farming and canopy management ensure even ripening. This wine is always hard to analyze in its youth. It needs many more years to soften and flesh out. Give it time."

97 Points | Wine Spectator

"Complex, with a luscious texture and saturated plum, blackberry, black olive, iron, tobacco and toasty spice aromas and flavors, this red features a full, rich timbre. Offers a lively, well-integrated structure, with a long aftertaste of fruit and spices and a pleasant chalky feel. Merlot."

18 points | Jancis Robinson

Tasting Notes

The 2020 Masseto is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. On the nose, expect scents of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and chocolate-dipped cherries. These notes are followed by hints of star anise, lilacs, mocha, and tar.

On the palate, the wine presents itself as full-bodied and remarkably concentrated, offering a multitude of layers filled with black fruit preserves and savoury undertones. This complex structure is elegantly framed by fully ripened, velvety tannins and well-integrated acidity, leading to a very extended and opulent finish.

After a mild, rainy winter, March brought a brief temperature drop with a few nights below 0°C. This chill arrived just as budding began in late March, but newly opened shoots remained protected by the bud’s cottony tissue, avoiding frost damage.

The rest of spring was warm with average rainfall, promoting steady growth until flowering between May 20 and 25. Intense rain arrived in June, followed by a long drought with high temperatures through August’s end. Veraison occurred uniformly and rapidly from July 20 to 25, and the grapes ripened under intense sun.

Late August rains cooled temperatures, with lows reaching 13°C—ideal for Merlots to finish ripening. The Merlots were harvested early to maintain freshness, just before a weeklong heatwave brought highs of 37°C. Harvest wrapped up on September 14, and Cabernet Franc followed, ending by September 16.

Opening a bottle releases a kaleidoscope of flavors—a unique mix of opulent richness and refined elegance.

97 Points | Vinous

"The Masseto Toscana IGT 2012 is an incredibly sexy wine. I can’t believe how expressive it is here. The year was mostly warm and dry, but not excessively so. Raspberry jam, mint, spice, white chocolate and sweet floral notes all race out of the glass. Sumptuous in feel, with gorgeous, open-knit fruit and soaring aromatic intensity, the 2012 dazzles from start to finish. What a wine!" (AG) (tasted Jan 2020)

99 Points | James Suckling

"Masseto Toscana IGT 2012 has "Fantastic aromas of lavender, rosemary, violets and currants. Full body, a wonderful concentration of fruit yet tense and taunt energy. The new wood is exposed now but will become integrated and polished. Give it three or four years together. The pure Merlot magic is there. The 2011 was a perfect wine, and this is very close indeed. Drink in 2019." (tasted Aug 2015)

95 Points | Wine Advocate

"The 2012 Masseto is seductive from the first sip. The 2011 edition of this wine was very successful, and not too different in character from this wine. What the 2012 vintage offers instead is a level of textural richness and creaminess that is absolutely outstanding. The very nature of the fruit feels velvety and silky smooth, without a single ripple. The bouquet reveals upfront aromas of dark cherry and spice that are contrasted perfectly against one another. Classic vintages of Masseto include 2001 and 2006. The 2012 vintage doesn't offer the same backbone firmness as those years, but it offers lots more exuberant richness instead. Some 32,000 bottles were produced. The wine should hold forward for many, many years. Drink 2017-2037" (Monica Larner tasted Oct 2015)

To open a bottle is to unleash a liquid kaleidoscope. A rare combination of sumptuous opulence and polished elegance.

As a tribute to its rugged force, its softness, and the debt it owes to the soil from which it rises, Masseto was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay called ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface.

Winemaking at Masseto is at the same time an adventure and a continuous discovery.
A patchwork of different terroirs.
Multiple subtle expressions of Merlot.

Tasting Notes

Masseto 2012 benefited from another particularly dry, sunny year which, thanks to the rains prior to the harvest, created perfect conditions for the ripening of the Merlot, without excessive heat or dryness and enhanced by the exceptional terroir of the Masseto vineyard. This vintage combines the principal characteristics of a great Masseto: rich and generous but also very fresh and with a firm structure in a wine of great intensity and complexity. Intense in colour, the olfactory impact develops classic notes of red and black fruit, chocolate and liquorice, subtly enhanced by notes of toasted wood. The palate shows well-rounded and full, with a thick, dense tannic texture that boasts rich fruit and spice notes. The finish is prolonged with a lively and vibrant acid vein that closes on a note of intense freshness.

Vintage

2012 was a dry growing year, like 2011, with the scarcity of water already evident during a cold, dry winter.

At budbreak, which occurred normally, a water deficit of some 100mm, compared to the multi-year average, was already evident. A mild, sunny spring brought excellent vine growth, with a rapid, consistent flowering.

July and August were hot and almost rain-free, prompting fears of arrested ripening due to lack of water. In spite of this, veraison was normal and satisfactory under optimal conditions.

A few spells of rain between the end of August and beginning of September gave final momentum to the ripening, and the fruit achieved a fine overall ripeness, with optimal levels of aromatics and polyphenols.

The harvest took place between 29th August and 17th September.
