97 points | James Suckling

Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falleto 2017 has "Sweet berries, smoke, cedar and olives on the nose. Floral. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and a pretty background and ripe fruit. Flavorful finish. Hints of bitter citrus and smoke, too. Very complex. Powerful for Falletto. Drink after 2026."

94 points | Wine Spectator

"This is broad and open-knit, offering plum, cherry, eucalyptus, juniper, licorice, tar and tobacco flavours. Dense tannins add grip as this turns more compact on the finish. The smooth texture and balance bode well for the future."

Piemonte’s Langhe region is famed for the great winemakers it has produced over the past century. Yet, few can rival Bruno Giacosa, not only for the stature of his work, but for the dizzying number of famous wines he made in a career that began in 1961 and ended with his death on January 21, 2018.

And while other men have made great wines in either Barolo or Barbaresco, only Giacosa, for more than a half century, produced a steady stream of heroic wines from both zones. In fact, so remarkable were his accomplishments that his legend transcends not only Piemonte, but Italy. He was, in short, one of the profoundly great winemakers of our time.

This Barolo comes from vines around 20 years old and facing south-west. After maceration for 15 days, the wine is aged for two years in foudres and eight months in bottles. When tasted, it reveals a garnet red color with orange nuances. It is rich on the nose, with a complex bouquet of truffles and red fruit liqueur. On the palate, the wine is also rich and very velvety.

96 points | The Wine Independent

"The Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco 2018 has a complex nose of sweet spice, light tobacco and black cherry. This is followed by a soft, gentle texture like melted butter, wrapping itself around cherries, light cream, sweet cinnamon, and cedar oak spice. The wine is medium-full bodied with a super-silky texture that flows gracefully across the palate with a wonderful seamless quality. There may be a little just-ripe fruit in the middle - more red fruits than black, with some lively notes of green herbs, flowers, and peppercorns but this provides an exciting contrast with the texture. The tannins are deeply integrated into the wine and feel almost invisible. Its finesse makes it approachable now, but it would be better to wait two years." (Susan Hulme MW, July 2022)

94 points | James Suckling

"A fine and pretty Barolo with plenty of strawberry and mushroom character. White truffle, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied and creamy with medium, round tannins. Delicious now and will improve nicely. (9/6/22)"

In the 2018 vintage, Bruno Giacosa chose not to vinify any single vineyards, creating instead a remarkable blend that harmoniously combines the best of the Asili, Santo Stefano, and Rabajà vineyards. The wine opens with delicate rose petals, sweet red berries, and fresh mint, offering a captivating bouquet. Supple, silky tannins provide an elegant structure, while a little time in the glass reveals complex aromas of damp earth and black truffle. This is a wine of exceptional balance, refinement, and class, showcasing the artistry of Bruno Giacosa’s winemaking.

Jancis Robinson

Bruno Giacosa Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore 2021 - "This current vintage is one of best vintages, according to the Giacosa team. Valmaggiore is a steep, south-facing cru in Roero that is difficult to work. Giacosa have been renting it long term so they work the 50- to 60-year-old vines. Production is low, vinification is traditional with a 25-day fermentation with pumpovers then 12 months in botte. Bottled at 14 months and released. Transparent garnet. Pure, fresh nose. Mineral and juicy. Bone-dry finish. Smooth tannins. Mouthwash impression. Definitely the pure Giacosa signature without paying the price of a Barolo or Barbaresco."
