Tenuta San Guido

'The only motive of all the ideas I shall try to explain is my unlimited respect for Nature, in all its forms, in all of its manufestations, in all of its mysteries, in all of its miracles that we are discovering little by little and that we shall never desist from admiring'.

Sassicaia wines are among the most prestigious and influential Italian wines, recognised for their exceptional quality and role in revolutionising winemaking practices in Italy.

Where it all began

At the core of Tenuta San Guido’s identity lies a rich tapestry of heritage dating back to the 1940s. It was here that Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, embarked on a journey to introduce a new winemaking paradigm to the Italian landscape. Armed with a vision and an unwavering commitment to quality, he planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines in the rocky soils of Bolgheri, a decision that would redefine Italian wine culture forever.

Sassicaia Cellar

The crowning jewel of Tenuta San Guido, Sassicaia, emerged as a revelation in the world of fine wines. With its inaugural vintage in 1968, Sassicaia shattered conventions, challenging the notion that Italy was solely the domain of indigenous grape varieties. Instead, it showcased the potential of Bordeaux varietals in the Mediterranean terroir, earning acclaim and adulation on a global scale.

Central to the allure of Sassicaia is its profound sense of place. The terroir of Bolgheri, characterized by its maritime climate, sun-kissed vineyards, and mineral-rich soils, imparts a distinctive character to the wines of Tenuta San Guido. The name “Sassicaia” itself, derived from the Italian word for “stony,” pays homage to the rugged terrain from which these exceptional wines spring forth. Each sip of Sassicaia tells a story of this unique terroir, evoking the salty sea breeze and sun-drenched earth of Bolgheri.

And beyond ...

Beyond the vineyards and cellars, Tenuta San Guido stands as a custodian of sustainability and environmental stewardship. Recognizing the profound connection between the land and the wine it yields, the estate embraces sustainable viticultural practices that honor and preserve the natural resources of Bolgheri. From organic farming methods to water conservation initiatives, Tenuta San Guido remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing the land for future generations.

Moreover, the legacy of Tenuta San Guido extends far beyond the boundaries of Bolgheri, leaving an indelible mark on the broader landscape of Italian winemaking. Through its pioneering spirit and relentless pursuit of quality, the estate has inspired generations of vintners to push the boundaries of tradition and embrace innovation in their craft. In doing so, Tenuta San Guido has helped to elevate Italian wine to unprecedented heights of excellence and acclaim.

Today Sassicaia, run by third-generation family member Priscilla Incisa, is considered one of Italy’s most iconic and collectable wines, with a consistent track record of critical acclaim and a loyal global following.
