Dominio de Pingus ‘Flor de Pingus’ 2021

96 points | Robert Parker

“I love the Dominio de Pingus ‘Flor de Pingus’ 2021, a more ethereal vintage that is very harmonious. A co-fermentation of some 3% Garnacha with Tempranillo, it’s an elegant wine in the style of 2018 and 2016, subtle and very balanced, with elegant tannins that give it very good silkiness. It is focused and fresh and has a sense of harmony and very integrated oak. There will be 104,000 bottles to be bottled around June 2023.”

96 points | James Suckling

Dominio de Pingus ‘Flor de Pingus’ 2021 – “Dark cherries, ripe but fresh blueberries, slate, violets and a hint of graphite. There is lushness of fruit but it remains fresh and very primary in the middle with powdery tannins and a long, even finish. Has volume and linearity as well. Drink or hold.”

95 points | Vinous

“The Dominio de Pingus ‘Flor de Pingus’ 2021 hails from several vineyards in La Horra, Ribera del Duero and spent 18 months in French oak barrels. Purple in hue. The complex, subtle aromas include sour cherry and blueberry intertwined with rose, herbs and garrigue hints. On the palate, it’s dry and velvety, with a balanced, fairly intense, chalky character that’s low on the freshness but high on energy. This is a distinctive, delicious red that reflects a modern approach to Ribera.”

Decanter

As David Williams in Decanter says generally of Pingus/Flor “In the shadow of Pingus? Only, perhaps, if you taste it after the grand vin, because Dominio de Pingus ‘Flor de Pingus’ 2021 is another haute-couture masterpiece in its own right, again with that highly polished tannic texture and layers of dark but succulent and perfectly ripe mulberry fruit, suggestions of something darker and savoury emerging, but for now this is just a gloriously sensual young wine with a pronounced sense of place. Biodynamic.”

Flor de Pingus receives the same rigorous viticulture as Pingus, making it a top contender among the best wines in the Ribera del Duero region. Since its creation, Peter Sisseck has championed two wines: Pingus and Flor de Pingus. Crafted from old Tempranillo vines in La Horra, Flor mirrors Pingus with its dedication to biodynamic practices and exceptional winemaking standards. The Wine Advocate has praised it, noting that Flor de Pingus might offer Spain’s best wine in terms of price and quality.

Produced in limited quantities—only 6,500 cases—Flor de Pingus ferments in open-top wooden tanks and ages for 18 months in a mix of old and new French oak barrels. The wine comes from estate-owned, head-pruned vines, ensuring greater control over quality. As Flor de Pingus gains recognition, collectors now seek out older vintages, which are seeing prices climb. This wine presents a unique profile, with roasted aromas, dark fruit, and spices, and its ability to age further adds to its allure.

Flor de Pingus stands strong on its own, making its mark as a sought-after wine that continues to evolve with each vintage.
