Winemaking at Masseto is at the same time an adventure and a continuous discovery.
A patchwork of different terroirs.
Multiple subtle expressions of Merlot.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 Masseto is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. On the nose, expect scents of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and chocolate-dipped cherries. These notes are followed by hints of star anise, lilacs, mocha, and tar.
On the palate, the wine presents itself as full-bodied and remarkably concentrated, offering a multitude of layers filled with black fruit preserves and savoury undertones. This complex structure is elegantly framed by fully ripened, velvety tannins and well-integrated acidity, leading to a very extended and opulent finish.
Vintage
After a mild, rainy winter, March brought a brief temperature drop with a few nights below 0°C. This chill arrived just as budding began in late March, but newly opened shoots remained protected by the bud’s cottony tissue, avoiding frost damage.
The rest of spring was warm with average rainfall, promoting steady growth until flowering between May 20 and 25. Intense rain arrived in June, followed by a long drought with high temperatures through August’s end. Veraison occurred uniformly and rapidly from July 20 to 25, and the grapes ripened under intense sun.
Late August rains cooled temperatures, with lows reaching 13°C—ideal for Merlots to finish ripening. The Merlots were harvested early to maintain freshness, just before a weeklong heatwave brought highs of 37°C. Harvest wrapped up on September 14, and Cabernet Franc followed, ending by September 16.
Opening a bottle releases a kaleidoscope of flavors—a unique mix of opulent richness and refined elegance.
