Clos Lanson Champagne 2008

98 points James Suckling

“Golden apples, chalk, hazelnuts, saltines and sandalwood on the nose, with cloves and salted caramel. Some white tobacco. Intriguing and full of character, building on the palate, with a full body and spicy, phenolic layers. Very tight mousse. Long and intense. From a 1ha walled plot of chardonnay in Reims. Disgorged December 2022. 4g/L dosage. 6,768 bottles produced. Drink or hold.” (2023)

97 points Jane Anson

“Just love the nuanced character of this Champagne, from the toasted brioche aromatics, to the white pear, saffran, iris flowers, spiralling through to sea shell and salted cracker. Gentle but persistent mousse that draws the flavours out and makes you go back for more. A magical vintage in Champagne, and this is a library release from the 1ha Clos Lanson, now in its third year on the Place de Bordeaux. Hervé Dantan winemaker, Emmanuel Gantet director. The grapes are sourced entirely from grand cru vineyards. (2023)”

“Smells quite autolytic, yeasty and bready, nutty too with faint florality and touches of salt – expressive and open on the nose with caramel, vanilla and buttery toast accents. Sharp and highly acidic on the palate with piercing citrus fruit aromas give this an immediate tang and edges and a tight frame offering some tension still. So frothy and lively, fresh and forward, this has an elegance to it that is really compelling with zing and a burst of lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit as well as some stony minerality that comes towards the finish. Bright, zesty and almost a bit sour, but there’s concentration all the way through and this rounds out nicely. Still young but a compelling wine right now. Ageing 12 years on its lees and six months post disgorgement. 4g/l Extra Brut. Grapes come from a 1ha single vineyard farmed biodynamically, and certified HVE since 2019. Library release. Director Emmanuel Gantet, winemaker Hervé Dantan. (2023) Drink 2023-2038.” (Georgina Hindle)

For Champagne collectors, this is unmissable. This single vineyard benefits from a very pure, chalky soil and an exceptional microclimate, which is ideal for the development of high-quality Chardonnay. It is then aged for a massive 12 years on the lees to add further complexity and nuance before release. The raw materials and winemaking are sensational. Combine this with “a magical vintage in Champagne” (Anson), and the result is spectacular.  *Only 6,768 bottles for the world*

History

Created in 1760, the Lanson house is one of the oldest Champagne Houses. Sourcing from more than 500 hectares allows them to choose only the best. The particularity of this House is to vinify without malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the natural aromas of the wines. These champagnes, with a balance between finesse and power, are essentially made from the most noble grape varieties: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Internationally recognized, the House of Lanson is on the most beautiful tables, from the Principality of Monaco to the Court of England since 1900!

In the Cellar

Vinified separately, the wines from Clos Lanson have unique and rare characteristics that have always seduced the House’s Cellar Masters. In 2006, the decision was taken to offer the eponymous Cuvée Clos Lanson, the only hectare of vines within the historic city limits of Reims.

Clos Lanson 2008 is a 100% Chardonnay Champagne, the juice from which comes exclusively from the first press, and is vinified for several months in oak barrels from the Argonne forest, in accordance with Victor Lanson’s wishes. After thirteen years’ aging in our cellars, the result is a precious wine of great finesse and remarkable purity.

This cuvée with its fine bubbles reveals a precise, lively nose, with a beautiful freshness. On the palate, notes of pear and yuzu offer great finesse. Aging in oak barrels brings out woody hazelnut flavors. This 2008 vintage offers an excellent balance between concentration and freshness.
