Ornellaia ‘Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia’ Bolgheri Rosso 2018

95 points | Decanter

Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2018 approachable style comes from younger vines or those on lighter, sandier soils, whilst retaining its potential to age in bottle. 2018 brought useful winter dormancy, provocative spring deluges, hot August flushes, and cool, calming harvest nights. It’s a sophisticated red with smooth, Ornellaia-esque appeal in a lighter key. Its forward-flowing, velvety fruit is well defined, clear, persistent and easy to engage with. Tannins from both fruit and oak are integrated and in sync. Drink 2021 – 2031. (Monty Waldin Mar 2021)

93 points | Wine Advocate

The Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2018 is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that is aged in oak for 15 months. The wine shows depth, concentration and generous fruit weight that adds to the intensity and the textural importance of this abundant, full-bodied expression. Late-season rains threw some challenges at the winemakers of Bolgheri, but this open-knit wine has emerged unscathed. Drink 2021 – 2030. (Monica Larner May 2021)

90 points | Wine Spectator

Rich and packed with black cherry, blackberry and plum flavors shaded by wild Mediterranean herbs and baking spices. It’s polished, yet dense, the tannins lining the lingering finish like cocoa powder. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now.  (Bruce Sanderson March 2021)

90-92 points | Vinous

The Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2018 shows the restrained style of the year in its nuanced personality. Sweet floral and spice notes add perfume to this super-expressive Serre Nuove. Dark red cherry, plum, rose petal, mint and mocha are nicely delineated throughout. In some recent vintages, Serre Nuove has leaned towards the more exuberant side of things. I have to say, I like this more moderate expression very much. The 2018 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. (Antonie Galloni July 2019)

Bolgheri DOC Rosso

Crafted from the same varieties, under the same sky, from the same philosophy: Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2018 is a proud second vin, which has the ability to foretell the personality of the estate’s flagship wine. Together, the two wines provide their own distinctive points of view. The pleasure of sipping Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia evolves over time, adding the charm of maturity to the vigour of youth.

Winemaker’s notes

“Characterized by a lively ruby red colour, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2018 is a wine of great aromatic complexity, a distinctive feature of this vintage. In the glass, aromas of berries, blackberry, raspberry and red cherry are accompanied by floral hints of wild rose and spicy notes of pink pepper and liquorice. On tasting, the wine has a good tannic structure, enveloping and balanced, with a crisp and savoury finish.” Olga Fusari – Winemaker May 2020

The 2018 Growing Season

After several years of mild winters, 2018 brought normal climatic conditions. Temperatures dropped enough for the vines to rest. Spring became one of the wettest on record, with three times the seasonal average rainfall and high temperatures in April. Despite a late budbreak, the weather conditions allowed rapid growth. The vines caught up and bloomed a week earlier than expected.

In May and, to a lesser extent, June, rainfall remained above average. We finally received some respite in July with a warm, dry month. Veraison occurred between July 22 and 25. August was as hot as the previous year but slightly wetter. The sugars and acidity developed slowly. The berries grew larger due to the high water levels in the soil.

September remained warm and dry, with higher than average temperatures. Cooler nights helped the vines recover and preserve aromas and acidity. We began harvesting red grapes on August 31 with Merlot and finished on October 8 with the later-ripening varieties.

Vinification & Aging

The clusters were hand-picked into 15 kg crates and then selected by hand on a double sorting table, before and after de-stemming, and finally gently crushed. Since 2016, optical sorting has been introduced in addition to manual selection, in order to further increase the quality of selection. Each variety and each parcel were vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel, at temperatures of between 26° and 30°C for two weeks followed by maceration of around 10-15 days. Malolactic fermentation was started in stainless steel and completed after transfer to barrels (25% new and 75% a year old). The wine remained in Ornellaia’s temperature-controlled cellar for a further 15 months. It was assembled after the first 12 months and then reintroduced in the barrels for a further 3 months. After bottling, it was aged for an additional six months prior to release. Axel Heinz – Estate Director
