Armand Rousseau Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques 2011

94 points | Robert Parker

Tasted the Armand Rousseau Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques 2011 blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St Jacques 2011 has an earthy bouquet, the stems quite prominent, though it is still well defined and full of freshness and vitality. It opens beautifully in the glass.

The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, more linear than its peers, the acidity pitched higher, but that just lends tension and race on the finish. The aftertaste is long with plenty of spicy black fruit and blackcurrant pastilles. This is a very commendable, more masculine, structured Clos St. Jacques that has improved since I last tasted it a few months ago, putting a gap between itself and Rousseau’s fellow premier cru. Armand Rousseau Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques 2011 – “Discreet wood sets off ultra-fresh and airy aromas of herbal tea, red currant, blue berries and plum that are trimmed in hints of wet stone and earth. There is a wonderfully refined mouth feel to the mineral-tinged middle weight flavours that possess an appealing verve along with superb detail on the harmonious and persistent if ever-so-slightly lean finish. This pretty if still notably firm effort should continue to reward mid-term cellaring though it is not so backward as to prevent it from being enjoyed now.”

70% new oak – from a new barrel. Fairly light nose – not dramatic. Good savoury undertow. But little muted. Subtle.(Nov 2012)

History

This domain owns 15 hectares of premier and grand crus vineyards, and only produces pinot noir. The domain was created at the beginning of the 20th century by Armand Rousseau, at the tender age of 18, after inheriting several plots of vineyard in Gevrey Chambertin.

Armand’s son, Charles Rousseau, took over the domain in 1959 and further enhanced its reputation for producing exceptional wines. He continued to acquire additional vineyards, including the coveted Clos Saint-Jacques vineyard, further solidifying the estate’s standing in Burgundy. Charles was highly respected for his meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking. The vineyards are managed with meticulous care, adhering to traditional and sustainable practices, including hand-harvesting and low-intervention winemaking.

Domaine Armand Rousseau has established itself as one of the most respected and sought-after producers in Burgundy. The limited production and high demand for their wines contribute to their exclusivity and premium pricing. They are highly coveted by collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts worldwide.
