Bruno Giacosa Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore 2021

Jancis Robinson

Bruno Giacosa Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore 2021 – “This current vintage is one of best vintages, according to the Giacosa team. Valmaggiore is a steep, south-facing cru in Roero that is difficult to work. Giacosa have been renting it long term so they work the 50- to 60-year-old vines. Production is low, vinification is traditional with a 25-day fermentation with pumpovers then 12 months in botte. Bottled at 14 months and released. Transparent garnet. Pure, fresh nose. Mineral and juicy. Bone-dry finish. Smooth tannins. Mouthwash impression. Definitely the pure Giacosa signature without paying the price of a Barolo or Barbaresco.”

Piemonte’s Langhe region is famed for the great winemakers it has produced over the past century. Yet, few can rival Bruno Giacosa, not only for the stature of his work, but for the dizzying number of famous wines he made in a career that began in 1961 and ended with his death on January 21, 2018.

And while other men have made great wines in either Barolo or Barbaresco, only Giacosa, for more than a half century, produced a steady stream of heroic wines from both zones. In fact, so remarkable were his accomplishments that his legend transcends not only Piemonte, but Italy. He was, in short, one of the profoundly great winemakers of our time.

Tasting note

Ruby red colour. The nose presents notes of red fruits. It has a good tannic plot, structure and pleasant freshness.
