Maison Roche de Bellene Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 “A kiss of burnt caramel introduces this supple, piercing expression of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most charming, endearing grand cru. Forward and fragrant with sun-drenched red cherry, raspberry and candied-violet notes, the satin-edged wine has a lingering mesquite finish. Hold till at least 2024. The wine should improve well through 2040 and hold further. ” Anna Lee C. Iijima
“Deep, bright red. Dark berries, licorice and violet on the perfumed nose, with a hint of exotic oak. Sappy, chewy and concentrated, showing excellent energy and a weightless impression to the flavors of dark berries, flowers and saline minerality. Distinctly sweeter and more pliant than the Clos Vougeot from Maison Roche de Bellene but this tactile, extract-rich wine is built to age. Finishes with ripe but firm tannins and lingering sweetness. A lovely expression of Charmes terroir. ” (ST)
“Deep ruby. A brooding and very reserved nose features aromas of dark berry fruit liqueur along with plenty of earth and underbrush nuances that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is excellent phenolic maturity to the supporting tannins that shape the suave, round and seductively textured flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration along with outstanding persistence. This is not an especially big Charmes but it’s deceptively structured as the mid-palate seems quite forward yet the finish tightens up substantially while still remaining impeccably well-balanced. Good stuff and because of the velvety palate feel, it’s a wine that could be enjoyed young too if desired.”
