Marchesi Antinori “Tignanello Toscana” IGT 2019

96 points | Wine Advocate

“The Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT 2019 was born in a classic growing season that saw some cooling summer rains and relatively stress-free conditions. This is an elegant and extremely polished wine made with mostly Sangiovese and smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Here too, the small blending element of Cabernet Franc has been slowly increasing in recent years. The 2019 vintage was born with a good amount of power and tannic structure, and maceration times were slightly reduced as a result. This less extractive approach shapes a polished and elegant wine with plenty of bright berry fruit, cherry, dried mint, blue flower, blood orange and rusty earth. The palate is more compact and streamlined. It shows beautiful grace.” (ML)

Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT 2019 is “A supple, elegant red highlighted by bright cherry, black currant, violet, tobacco, iron and oak spice aromas and flavors. Though fluid and seemingly approachable now, this is well-structured and shows the balance to age. Fine length. “(BS)

“Extremely perfumed and vivid, with fresh mushrooms, cherry stones and blackberries. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are long and complete. Fresh acidity. Tangy and vibrant. Lovely is the word.”

95 points | Vinous

“The Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT 2019 is one of the most reserved, understated young wines I can remember tasting here. In so many vintages Tignanello is quite showy, but in 2019 the nervous energy and brightness of Sangiovese takes center stage. That’s intriguing, because the 2019 blend has a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon than normal, a decision made to compensate for some of the lighter qualities in the Sangiovese. With air the 2019 shows gorgeous depth and captivating inner perfume, even if it is clearly still coming together. The 2019 spent about 14 months in oak, with 50% new wood. Things are always in constant evolution at Antinori. This is the first vintage to incorporate some larger 500L barrels, an approach I think will work brilliantly.” (AG)

Tasting Notes

Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT 2019 displays a deep ruby red color. The nose reveals complex notes of red fruits, strawberries, and pomegranate, which blend with delicate aromas of apricot, peach syrup, and vanilla. Dried flowers, chocolate, and hints of nutmeg add elegance, while coffee, caramel, and Mediterranean herbs complete the bouquet. The palate is graceful and full, with vibrant, silky tannins adding liveliness and length. The aftertaste highlights roasted coffee and bitter chocolate.

Vintage

The 2019 growing season in Chianti Classico was marked by normal weather conditions. A cold, dry winter led to a cool, rainy spring, especially in April and May. The summer was warm but free of intense heat, with rain that supported steady vine and grape growth. By late August, ideal weather set in and continued through October, ensuring all grape varieties reached peak ripeness. Harvest began in mid-September with Sangiovese and concluded on October 16 with Cabernet.

Vinification

The 2019 climate required focused work in both the vineyards and cellar. During fermentation in truncated conical tanks, careful maceration on the skins preserved aromas, color, and refined tannins. Daily tastings guided racking before transferring the wine into small oak barrels for malolactic fermentation to enhance aromatic complexity. Aging continued for 14–16 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels, both new and second-use, with lots aged separately before final blending. After blending, the wine completed barrel aging and was then bottle-aged for an additional 12 months before release. Tignanello 2019 is primarily Sangiovese with small portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
