Napanook 2023

97 points | James Suckling

Aromas of blueberries, ash, stones, blackberries, orange peel and chocolate. Medium-bodied, with polished, velvety tannins, cedar and baking spices such as nutmeg on the palate, a soft silky texture and a long finish. He calls it “enchanting and delicious.”

94 points | Robert Parker’s (Wine Advocate)

Described as easily rivaling the excellent 2021, possibly even better. Notes of cherries, dusty loam and vanilla, with a lush medium- to full-bodied palate, seductive fruit and tannins, and a finish showing black olives and black tea framed by soft tannins.

92 points | Jeb Dunnuck

Deep purple in hue, showing currants, leafy tobacco, graphite and underbrush. Medium-bodied, pure, elegant and graceful, with ripe polished tannins, integrated acidity and a strong finish. Blend noted as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in 20% new French oak; suggested drinking window 2025–2040.

Tasting Note

Inky-dark aromas of blackberry, violet and liquorice, with sweet spices and black pepper.

The palate is tightly packed, explosive dark berry flavours vying with impressive structure, the fine tannins boasting a polished fruit coating. A wine of strutting stature that shows how to render power elegantly.

The finish is focussed, salty and long. There is a pull to exuberance here, but it is kept in check, and the lasting sensation is one of control.

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot

Recommended drinking from 2027 – 2035

The Vineyard

“The 2023 growing season unfolded at a moderate pace, shaped by generous rainfall. Spring temperatures were mild and a later-than-usual harvest rewarded patience.

Total rainfall from July 2022 through June 2023 reached 51 inches (historical average of 31 inches) replenishing soils and providing ample water reserves heading into the growing season.

Spring conditions led to a complete berry set. Veraison occurred roughly two weeks later than average, and the extended growing cycle allowed for even, gradual ripening and the development of depth and balance. An abundant harvest took place between October 7 and 18 under favourable weather conditions.”
