Tinto Pesquera ‘Millenium’ Gran Reserva 2018

94 points | Decanter

Tinto Pesquera ‘Millenium’ Gran Reserva 2018 has a “restrained red and black fruit nose. The palate has great depth, energy and well-managed tannins; complex and rather classic with a long and pleasant aftertaste.”

94 points | James Suckling

“Complex nose with plenty of sweet spices, pine cones, vanilla and black walnuts to the blackberries and black mushrooms. A hint of bergamot. Tight and creamy on the palate. Don’t be put off by the wood tannins if you open it and drink it while it is young. The fine-grained tannins mesh nicely with the full-bodied palate. While this is quite plush with an old-school Ribera del Duero style, the quality is still impressive. Needs time and should age well in the next 10-15 years. Better from 2026.” (tasted by Zekun Shuai in Sept 2023)

Background

Tinto Pesquera Millenium Gran Reserva 2018 exemplifies the excellence of the Familia Fernández Rivera winery. This oenological gem comes from Ribera del Duero, Spain. The Gran Reserva reflects the winery’s dedication to quality and expresses the unique terroir.

Produced with Tempranillo grapes from old vineyards, it embodies an exceptional vintage. The vineyard receives meticulous care, with manual harvesting and strict grape selection to ensure only the finest fruits are used.

After fermentation, the wine matures in American and French oak barrels. This aging process enhances complexity without sacrificing Tempranillo’s signature identity and freshness. Additional bottle aging brings harmony and elegance.

Tasting Note

Tinto Pesquera Millenium Gran Reserva 2018 displays a deep cherry red color with garnet undertones. The aroma reveals ripe black fruits like blackberries and plums, along with hints of spice, vanilla, and cocoa from barrel aging. Balsamic and earthy notes add complexity.

On the palate, the wine is powerful, yet elegant and balanced. Silky tannins provide structure and suggest excellent aging potential. Well-integrated acidity gives freshness, while flavours of ripe fruit blend with spice and balsamic notes, ending in a long finish.

Tinto Pesquera Millenium Gran Reserva 2018 is enjoyable now but will evolve with age. It pairs perfectly with red meats, game, aged cheeses, and bold dishes.

Vintage Notes

The 2018 growing season featured long, cold winters and short, dry, hot summers. The Ribera del Duero Regulatory Board rated the vintage as “Very Good.”
