Alejandro Fernández Wines
The Master of Tempranillo
Alejandro Fernández, celebrated as the “Master of Tempranillo,” played a crucial role in reviving Ribera del Duero’s wine industry. Affectionately called “Alejandro the Great,” he turned his lifelong passion for wine into reality after years in agricultural machinery. Among his notable achievements was the invention of a revolutionary sugar beet harvester during an economic crisis. Despite encouragement to grow sugar beets, he steadfastly planted Tempranillo, the “queen of grapes,” showcasing his visionary commitment to Spanish winemaking.
Inheriting Tradition
In 1972, Fernández inherited a small farm with a 16th-century wine press, which he preserved as part of Tinto Pesquera’s heritage. Starting with a modest, makeshift winery, he introduced innovative viticulture practices to elevate the quality of his wines.
For example, he implemented espalier training systems to manage vine growth and organic fertilizers to enrich the soil.
Pioneering Techniques in Winemaking
Fernández carefully controlled fermentation times and temperatures, ensuring consistent quality in every vintage.
Additionally, he experimented with oak aging, opting to forgo filtration to preserve complexity and authenticity. This commitment to craftsmanship set his wines apart, earning them international acclaim for their rich fruit flavors, nuanced wood notes, and remarkable aging potential.
