The Master of Tempranillo
Celebrated as the “Master of Tempranillo,” Alejandro Fernández played a crucial role in reviving Ribera del Duero’s wine industry. Affectionately called “Alejandro the Great,” he initially worked in agricultural machinery, but eventually turned his lifelong passion for wine into reality. During an economic crisis, he nevertheless achieved a notable milestone by inventing a revolutionary sugar beet harvester, thereby demonstrating his innovation in agriculture. Although he received encouragement to grow sugar beets, he instead deliberately chose to plant Tempranillo, the “queen of grapes.” In doing so, he showcased his visionary dedication to Spanish winemaking and ultimately helped elevate the global profile of Ribera del Duero wines.


Inheriting Tradition
In 1972, Fernández inherited a small farm with a 16th-century wine press, which he preserved as part of Tinto Pesquera’s heritage. Starting with a modest, makeshift winery, he introduced innovative viticulture practices to elevate the quality of his wines.
For example, he implemented espalier training systems to manage vine growth and, additionally, used organic fertilizers to enrich the soil.
Pioneering Techniques in Winemaking
Additionally, he experimented with oak aging, opting to forgo filtration to preserve complexity and authenticity. Fernández carefully controlled fermentation times and temperatures, ensuring consistent quality in every vintage.
This commitment to craftsmanship set his wines apart, earning them international acclaim for their rich fruit flavors, nuanced wood notes, and remarkable aging potential.
