Marchesi Antinori
Le Mortelle 'Poggio alle Nane'
Le Mortelle, part of the renowned Antinori family’s wine estates, showcases Tuscan history and innovative winemaking. The Antinori family, with over 600 years of winemaking heritage, acquired the estate in 1999. Situated near Castiglione della Pescaia in the Maremma region of Tuscany, the estate reflects the family’s dedication to both tradition and sustainability. Its name honours the wild myrtle, or “mortella,” thriving in the area.
Le Mortelle symbolizes Maremma’s quality, producing wines focused on terroir and balance. Vineyards sit on rolling hills near the Tyrrhenian Sea, where warm days and cool sea breezes create an ideal microclimate.
This natural ventilation is essential in the Maremma region, where summers can be hot, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly while retaining fresh acidity. The estate’s primary varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Sangiovese, which flourish in the region’s clay and sand soils. Additionally, the vineyards include some Merlot, Petit Verdot, and white varietals like Vermentino and Ansonica, adding diversity and complexity to the estate’s portfolio. The wine “Poggio alle Nane,” for example, highlights the estate’s best Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, delivering a deep, structured, and elegant expression of the region’s potential.
A dedicated team, led by winemaker Renzo Cotarella, oversees winemaking at Le Mortelle with tradition and innovation. Cotarella and his team prioritize gentle fruit handling and minimal cellar intervention to highlight each wine’s unique character. State-of-the-art technology enhances traditional methods, including gravity-fed processes designed for efficiency and low environmental impact. Fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts, preserving natural expression and authenticity. Wines age in French oak and concrete, achieving both refinement and balance.
Le Mortelle combines innovation, environmental respect, and a passion for quality, making it one of Tuscany’s most compelling estates.
